The goal of K to the 8th Power is to provide an easy-to-use platform for developing computer literacy and applied technology skills. School lab directors and classroom teachers can use this curriculum to develop computer literate and technology savvy students while at the same time reinforcing National and State academic standards. This powerful combination assists the lab director and classroom teacher with practical computer lab activities and exercises that reinforce not only what is being taught in the classroom, but also what is being tested and measured annually.
Computer-based lab activities which develop technology literacy are taught in the context of core academic lessons. Lesson content is based on National and State academic standards in reading, math, and written language. National and State examination objectives are used as the basis for the computer lab activities and lesson content. This approach gives the classroom teacher and computer lab director an abundance of material that integrates technology into core academics. As students develop computer literacy they are also building upon the reading, math, and written language skills being taught in the classroom. In addition, using multiple learning modalities provided by the courseware, each student more easily grasps the objectives of National and State examinations.
Careful attention has been given to the unique needs of the ESL/ELL students to assist in their English Language development. The self-paced design of the curriculum and the engaging learning environment encourage the English language learner in the development of listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and writing skills. This curriculum is suitable for all ESL/ELL students regardless of their native language or degree of English proficiency. Essential technology skills and core academics are taught and reinforced at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Lesson content and language proficiency skills are aligned with English Language Development examination standards.
This curriculum and associated computer lab activities can be used by computer lab directors in a computer lab or by individual teachers in a "computer learning center." Student progress is automatically tracked and recorded as the student progresses through the activities and assessments. The Learning Management System (LMS) provided with this curriculum contains many features to assist with the learning process and with student tracking. Features such as grade books, calendars, informational libraries, and other resources accompany the curriculum to provide an advanced solution for individual learning and tracking.
