Second Grade Objectives
The second grade academic objectives are listed below:
- Describe place value to hundreds
- Recognize and understand greater than, less than, and equal to (<, >, =) using numbers from 0-999
- Recognize and understand ordinal positions (1st-20th)
- Solve basic problems related to fractions - 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10
- Demonstrate the ability to count by 2’s, 5’s, to 100
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic addition facts - sums to 18
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic subtraction facts
- Solve addition and subtraction problems using data from simple charts and picture graphs
- Count, compare, and make change - coins to dollar bills
- Make basic measurements - inch, foot, yard
- Demonstrate an understanding of time - hour, half hour, quarter hour (analog and digital)
- Geometry - cube, rectangular solid, sphere, cylinder, cone
- Construct, read, and interpret simple picture and bar graph
- Calendar skills
- Continue to create and extend patterns
- Create story problems using numerical sentences
- Create short stories
- Share stories with an audience
- Demonstrate an understanding of consonant blends and common vowel patterns
- Recognize prefixes, suffixes, contractions, and abbreviations
- Read and create poetry
- Locate information to answer questions
- Paraphrase information in nonfiction material
- Describe characters in fictional selections
- Write about what is read
- Generate ideas for writing
- Organize writing (beginning, middle, and end)
- Revise writing (edit for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar)
- Write declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences
- Demonstrate an understanding of capitalization of proper nouns and beginning of sentences
- Add and subtract two-digit and three-digit numbers (regrouping)
